Proofreading Jobs
Proofreading Jobs/Business for Work at Home Moms
What is it?
Proofreading is the act of reading through a document thoroughly and looking for grammatical, spelling and any other mistakes that may be seen. Any errors within a document that are left there can make it difficult for someone to read through it. This causes people to lose interest when they’re too distracted by all the mistakes they see. The document then doesn’t get read, so it becomes useless to the person owning it.
It’s easy to make mistakes and miss those mistakes when writing the text. A fresh pair of eyes is a good asset to someone wanting to put out a good article or product. That’s when they look to a proofreader to be their second set of eyes to spot any errors that may reside within their documents.
What skills are needed?
You don’t need to take a special course to become a proofreader, but you should have excellent spelling and grammar skills under your belt. A good knowledge of the English language and common slang words are encouraged as well.
Some colleges do offer a proofreading course, so you may want to consider taking it for a refresher, to keep yourself up to date on grammar and spelling. You can also pick up tips on how to become a better proofreader to help increase your business.
What equipment is needed?
You should start off with a good, reliable computer along with software programs to open and read the documents that would be sent to you to proofread. The software you would need to have can vary depending on what program was used to write the document you are proofreading.
You should also have a good dictionary to have in your home office for quick reference as well as a good thesaurus. A good printer is also recommended to print some of the documents with to give you a better view to be able to spot the mistakes.
How do I get the business started?
Setting up a website to market your business is your best bet to getting started. Having the site to lure clients to you will help kick start your career in proofreading. Freelance bidding sites can also be used to gain some clients and get referrals to other people that may be needing your services.
How to find clients/market the business
You will want to start by contacting different writers and offering your proofreading services to them. They focus their time on creating the written documents that they don’t always have time to do their own proofreading or they may have trouble spotting the mistakes.
Website owners are also good to market to as most of the written material we see on the internet is located on some website. Sometimes simply contacting a website owner to let them know of some mistakes that you’ve spotted on their web pages can get you your first client. They may not be interested, but it doesn’t hurt to give it a shot.
If you’re one of those people that can look at any written material and start picking out spelling and grammar mistakes, this would be the career to look into. You don’t have to have an English degree to start your own business as long as you have a good understanding of the English language.
